An Invitation to Studios, Distributors & Rights Holders
The Film Index is not a streaming platform. It is not a review aggregator. It is not a popularity contest.
The Film Index is a curated academic resource dedicated to the art and craft of filmmaking.
Every film on this site was selected for a single reason: it has something to teach. A groundbreaking use of light. A revolutionary approach to sound design. A performance that redefined what the medium could express. We exist to preserve and share the knowledge embedded in cinema's greatest achievements — and to ensure that knowledge is accessible to every filmmaker, student, and scholar who seeks it.
We believe this makes us fundamentally different from every other film site on the internet, and we believe that difference creates a unique opportunity for collaboration.
Why The Film Index Is Different
Most film databases rank movies by popularity. We don't rank at all. Most review sites reduce films to a score. We break them down into the techniques, decisions, and innovations that make them essential viewing for anyone serious about the craft.
Our audience isn't browsing for something to watch on a Friday night. They are studying. They are learning. They are filmmakers — emerging and established — who come to The Film Index because they want to understand how and why a film works, not just whether it's "good."
This means that when a visitor encounters your film on The Film Index, they arrive with intent, curiosity, and respect for the work. That is an audience worth reaching.
What We're Offering
Direct Viewing & Purchase Links
Films currently featured on The Film Index link to general search results. We would prefer to send our audience directly to you.
If you are a studio, distributor, or rights holder, we invite you to provide your preferred destination — whether that's a streaming platform, a digital purchase page, a physical media storefront, or your own distribution channel. We will replace the generic link with a direct path to your content, ensuring our visitors reach your film through the channel you choose.
There is no cost for this. It serves our mission and it serves yours.
New Film Submissions
If you represent a film that is not yet featured on The Film Index and believe it belongs here, we welcome your submission.
All submissions — regardless of studio size, production budget, or distribution reach — undergo the same editorial evaluation. Our curatorial standard is singular: does this film offer meaningful educational value to students and practitioners of the craft?
A micro-budget independent film that pioneers a novel approach to visual storytelling is as welcome here as a major studio release. A documentary that reveals something essential about the filmmaking process is as valuable as a narrative feature with a nine-figure budget. The only currency that matters on The Film Index is craft.
We do not accept payment in exchange for inclusion. Every film on this site earned its place through artistic and educational merit.
Sponsored Visibility
For rights holders whose films are featured on The Film Index (or whose submissions are accepted), we offer optional sponsored visibility opportunities:
- Homepage Promotion: Featured placement on The Film Index homepage, introducing your film to our full audience of filmmakers, students, and cinephiles.
- Film Study Integration: Potential inclusion of your film in our curated Film Study guides — structured educational resources used for academic study, self-directed learning, and curriculum development.
- Highlighted Entries: Enhanced presentation of your film's detail page, including expanded technical analysis, supplementary materials, or exclusive behind-the-scenes context you provide.
Sponsored visibility is clearly disclosed to our audience and is only available for films that meet our editorial standards. We will never promote a film we haven't vetted. Our credibility is the foundation of everything we offer, and it is not for sale.
Our Commitment
The Film Index was built on a simple conviction: filmmaking knowledge should be shared, not gatekept.
We are not driven by advertising revenue, affiliate commissions, or engagement metrics. Our focus is — and will remain — educational. Every decision we make is measured against a single question: does this help someone become a better filmmaker?
That commitment extends to how we work with partners. We will never misrepresent a film's place on our site. We will never compromise our curatorial standards for a sponsorship. We will never prioritize commercial relationships over the integrity of the resource we've built.
What we will do is work with you to ensure that when our audience discovers your film — because it genuinely deserves to be here — they can find it, watch it, study it, and buy it through the channels you prefer.
How to Get Started
We welcome inquiries from:
- Major studios and distributors seeking direct linking for catalog titles already featured on The Film Index
- Independent filmmakers and production companies interested in submitting films for editorial review
- Rights holders of any scale interested in sponsored visibility for qualifying titles
- Educators and institutions who wish to collaborate on Film Study content
To begin a conversation, please contact us at [email protected] with the subject line "Studio Partnership Inquiry" and include:
- Your name and the organization you represent
- The film(s) you'd like to discuss
- Whether you're interested in direct linking, a new submission, sponsored visibility, or a combination
We review all inquiries personally. Because The Film Index is a curated resource — not an automated platform — please allow reasonable time for our team to evaluate submissions and respond thoughtfully.
A Note to Independent Filmmakers
We want to be explicit about this: you do not need a studio behind you to be on The Film Index.
If you made a film that pushed the boundaries of the craft — that solved a problem in a way no one had before, that found beauty in constraint, that taught you something about filmmaking that others need to learn — we want to hear from you.
The Film Index was built to celebrate the art, not the budget. The only thing we ask is that your work has something to teach.
The Film Index is an independent, editorially curated resource. All content decisions are made solely by our editorial team. Sponsored visibility is subject to editorial approval and is disclosed to our audience. Inclusion on The Film Index does not constitute endorsement of any commercial product or service beyond acknowledgment of a film's artistic and educational merit.
