Biography
01 JAN 1879 - 08 MAY 1952
William Fox was an American film industry pioneer who transitioned from nickelodeon exhibition to production and studio ownership. Beginning as a theater owner in 1904, he successfully challenged Thomas Edison's Motion Pictures Patent Company in a prolonged legal battle, ending the film trust and enabling him to establish his own production company in 1913. Fox Film Corporation was formally consolidated in 1915 and produced successful films starring Theda Bara and Tom Mix. His studio's profits supported ambitious artistic projects and technical innovations. In 1927, Fox acquired American patent rights to the sound-on-film process and pioneered widescreen cinematography. However, following a federal anti-trust investigation in 1930, Fox was forced out of his company. His later life was marked by financial and legal difficulties, including a prison sentence beginning in 1941.
