Marguerite Duras was a French novelist, playwright, screenwriter, essayist, and experimental filmmaker of considerable significance. Her script for Hiroshima mon amour earned her a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards. Born in French Indochina to French educators, Duras's early life was marked by family relocations across Indochina and France.
