A man (Thomas Edison's assistant) takes a pinch of snuff and sneezes. This is one of the earliest Thomas Edison films and was the second motion picture to be copyrighted in the United States.

Fred Ott's Sneeze is the ultimate example of the "Cinema of Attractions" (1885–1910s). In this era, filmmakers weren't trying to tell stories; they were essentially showmen displaying a technological miracle to an audience hungry for visual spectacles.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Spectacle over Story: Notice that there is absolutely no plot or character development. The "attraction" is purely the kinetic energy of a human body in motion.
The Fixed, Single Shot: Observe how the camera never moves, cuts, or zooms. It is a continuous, locked-down shot that treats the audience as distant observers rather than participants immersed in a story.
The "Black Maria" Mise-en-scène: Look at the stark black background. This was the signature look of Thomas Edison's custom-built studio, which used a dark interior and an open roof to funnel harsh natural sunlight directly onto the subject.
